In this part of the island, it is the elements that dictate to the world how to live. This strip of land located in the southwest of Iceland is marked by an active underground volcanic activity. Its cooled lava soil, that does not allow to the vegetation to grow, gives us to see bald reliefs and dark rocks typical of volcanic areas, a moonscape shaped by lava flows… The combination of that, a lot of hot springs and sulfur springs make us understanding why Rekjanes Peninsula is an incredible place of special beauty. It is also a unique place in the world because it is the only point on earth where the rift that separates the tectonic plates of Europe and North America is out of the ocean and visible. These extraordinary reliefs shelter many species of birds which are stunning with their unique color blends.

The largest and deepest lake in this part of Iceland. The lake sits on a highly active volcanic fissure zone. The lake is surrounded by black sand shores and volcanic mountains. After the series of earthquakes in 2000, the lake began to disappear into a large fissure created by one of the earthquakes : an enigmatic phenomenon… Summer houses that were once mere steps from waterfront are now more than a kilometer away from the water’s edge. The placid waters have dropped more than four meters during the following year. In their place is a barren lake bed speckled with sulphur-rimmed thermal springs that spit boiling water and mud.

We continue our journey to the charming geothermal field of Seltún. This place has many mudpots and fumaroles, heated by an underground magma chamber. Sulphuric water and gases have created colorful deposits. We will take a wooden pathways to explore this fascinating area, especially when a new maar is born with a spectacular explosion.

Near the geothermal fields are located several maars, rounded lakes. They were formed by explosions caused by the overheated steam of groundwater. We will stop at the largest one : Grænavatn. Up to 46 meters deep and 350 meters wide, it is a gorgeous emerald colored lake caused by a combination of thermal algae and sunlight absorbing crystals.

The journey proceeds through one of Iceland’s best-known bird-cliffs and the highest cliffs in the southwest part of Iceland. Their average height is 50 meters, and the highest point is 70 meters. It is a home for almost 60 000 pairs of birds – mostly gulls, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars. From the middle of March to the end of August you can watch also puffins – a living symbol of Iceland. And if we are lucky we can also see whales and dolphins which are floating near the shore.

This place is both surprising and enchanting. This is a crater with ocher and orange stones that contrast with the turquoise milky waters of a lake located at the top. It is said that if you put your head under the water, you can hear the volcano breathing…

The tour continues through wonderful lava fields and we go to the unique place where two of the Earth’s tectonic plates split. You will have the opportunity to walk over this footbridge which crosses the fissure. This 18 meters long bridge, in a symbolic purpose, illustrates the phenomenon of continental drift and connects the tectonic plates. It is where the Old World (Eurasian continent) and the New World (North American continent) was engaged in a tug of war. From the 1220s to the 1240s, the area was all on fire ! Evidence of this firestorm can still be seen in the canyons, crevices and along the jagged lines of this amazing place.

“The Trout Fall” is the largest and the most spectacular waterfall of river Þjórsá. It is also one of the most voluminous waterfalls in Iceland. The average water flow is 360 m³ / sek. A relatively unknown but a very spectacular and powerful waterfall full of beauty, an ideal place for photographers with beautiful surroundings.

A picturesque waterfall of an unusual high of 65m, irrigated by the river Seljalandsá, itself fueled by Eyjafjallajökull glacier. One of the most popular subjects for photographers. As water flows overhang, it is possible to take a path that allows going behind the waterfall. From there, the sight is simply divine. You will discover how fun it is to sneak and disappear behind the water curtain and be out of world for a moment… You will be dazzled by this magnificent site, the power of the water, the beautiful rainbows which go through the waterfall due to the sunlight and the vapor droplets. Sometimes the wind seems to move the water curtain. A magical show of the nature…

Also called Gljúfrabúi, this interesting waterfall is carefully hidden behind a narrow opening in the mountain. Listen the deep roaring, echoing sound of the falling water and become an explorer to find out this magical and intimate place which keeps the purity of a place out of time.

One of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and one of the 5 largest in the country. An iconic symbol with a width of 25m and a drop of 60m. Getting so close to the base of such a large waterfall is a quite rare experience. You can also enjoy it from above : there are stairs that lead to the top. The view from there is stunning. On sunny days, you can see a single or a double rainbows which are formed with the powerful water splashing.

The name Dyrhólaey means “door hill island” in Icelandic. This curious rocky arm is piercing with a shape which forms a door, an opening to the ocean… It is also a natural parc, sanctuary of birds, where you can observe many species especially the puffins, living symbol of Iceland. From there it is possible to admire a landscape of raw beauty formed by the long beaches of black sand, the unleashed ocean, the cliffs with rugged shapes, formed by a piling up of basalt columns.

This black sand beach is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. From there you can observe the Reynisdrangar, these lava columns sculpted by the waters, which emerge from the ocean. These dark and towering formations, the highest is 66m high, are the remains of the piling up of cooled lava. According to the legend, they are ancient trolls who have been surprised out of their caves

It is the most southerly village in the country. After Vík í Mýrdal, nothing else except the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its church, a white building with a red roof located on a hill, proudly dominates the modest houses of this village. The ocean on one side, the imposing cliffs of Mount Reynisfjall on the other side. Its isolated location and its magnificent environment have made the character of the village. The wind, the water and the time have carved the different rocky buildings that surround it. There is no place for the superfluous : it is nature, rigorous and beautiful, which lays down the law.

During the trip, you can enjoy the sight of the glaciers : Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, Vestmanna islands and volcano Hekla. (Depending on the weather conditions).

It is believed that Fjaðrárgljúfur was created around 9000 years ago, by progressive erosion of flowing water from glaciers through the rocks. This magnificent serpentine and narrow canyon is about 100 meters deep and about 2 km long. You can feel the power of the nature on the massive rocky walls with impressive shapes and enjoy an endless view into the valley with the sound of the river as music background.

Skaftafell is a part of Vatnajökull National Park who includes a considerable part of the biggest glacier of Europe. It is a perfect place for nature lovers with a birch forest, shelter of many birds species. The breathtaking scenery of Skaftafell is full of stark contrasts and contains some of the most precious natural pearls of the country. You will enjoy a nice short walk on the glacier edge and will be amazed by the various glacial tongues flanked by jagged mountains, the rugged landscapes, the flora and the fauna… You can feel the magnetic influence of this unique place.

A popular glacier tongue of Vatnajökull, which is one of the largest glaciers of Iceland. You can experience the natural contrasts of the region : vast stretches of black sand and craters which suddenly give a way to bright walls of white ice, with blue highlights – huge and majestic. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and dramatic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. These wonders reflect the perpetual struggle between fire and ice.

We will make a first stop to Fjallsárlon, a beautiful glacier lagoon before to continue to Jökulsárlón, a major attraction of Iceland, a fabulous and magnificent location where lot of videos and movies were shooting (e.g. James Bond, Lara Croft…). Jökulsárlón is one of the most beautiful places in the world, where the nature proves that once again, she does wonders. The Glacier Lagoon was formed in the 30s and continues to expand since then. The water comes from the melting of the largest glacier in Europe. The icebergs drift slowly into the deep water and the ice gleams with beautiful colours ranging from the brightest white to the darkest blue, through the most startling turquoise… Landscapes of contrast, paradise setting, Jökulsárlón gives the impression to be at the end of the world. The place has the ideal atmosphere for meditation and it is difficult to look away of the multiple icebergs. This calming moment is only disrupted by the sound of ice blocks colliding and remind the ephemeral nature of this exceptional place.

Þjórsárdalur is one of the hidden treasures of Iceland, a beautiful valley full of amazing natural attractions. Traversed by Þjórsá river – the longest one in Iceland, the area is lush with vegetation and offers a landscape of sharp contrasts such as flourishing birch woods, sandy lava fields, surprising rock formations, rivers and numerous picturesque waterfalls. The valley is quite flattened and covered by pumice after the repeated eruptions of the famous volcano Mt. Hekla which is nearby. Landgræðsla Ríkisins (the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland) continue to conduct extensive soil reclamation (with trees, lupins and other plants) and the place is now listed as a National Forest. You will be amazed by the unforgettable scenery of this green valley with the Mt. Hekla in the background.

We continue our journey to the astonishing waterfall Hjálparfoss. The name of this place can be roughly translated “Help” and comes from the earlier times when travelers, who crossed Sprengisandur highlands road, found great aid in reaching the water and lush vegetated area to graze their horses after their long journey over the desert. Hjálparfoss is a two-stepped waterfall, split over two separate flumes that joins at its base into a large plunge pool. You can take an easy descending walking path with long steps to join viewing platforms and get close to the shore of the wide pool. The waterfall is framed by beautiful basalt formations and lava structures which are a remnant of various eruptions from Mt. Hekla. It creates a nice contrast to the white water stream.

Also called Bláhylur “The Blue Pool”, this charming lake is located inside a crater. Hnausapollur is around 30 hectare and has been formed around 1130 years ago after an explosive volcanic eruption. The deep blue of the water and the color of the mountains around are surreal. When you stand on the hill above the crater, the view is amazing and it is like looking over landscapes painted on canvas.

It is another wonderful lake, full of colors, close to Landmannalaugar. A place not to be missed. The volcanic activity of the area has created a unique dream landscape, with lava flows who plunge directly into the blue and green deep water of the lake.

Landmannalaugar is a wonderful place with stunning geological curiosities known all over the world, a superb summary of mind-blowing landscapes, full of extraordinary wonders. This is a key layover for any traveler : real calm in full communion with nature. Volcanic activity has given way to a mountainous area that offers an exceptional range of contrasting colors. These cryolite mountains are among the most spectacular ones in Iceland. Lava flows, very visible, form chambers of a black raven color which enhance other orange shades. We will enjoy an easy trekking through the multicolored mountains. The walking path leads us to the volcano Brennisteinsfjöll “Sulfuric Mountain” which is probably the most colorful of Iceland : the yellow of sulfide superposes itself with the blue and black of lava fields, dotted of the green from lichens. It is magical to reach this place and see remarkable geothermal features. Panoramic views over Landmannalaugar Valley are unforgettable. This hiking of several hours is accessible to all, even to casual hikers. After this walk, you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the natural hot pool nestled at the foot of Laugahraun lava field. The hot springs has a combination of hot and cold waters because of the boiling hot flows from the volcanic activity and the freezing waters of the surrounding glaciers. A perfect temperature at around 40 degrees for relaxing the body.

The crater lake Ljótipollur was formed in an explosion in 1477 along the Torfajökull Volcanic System. The name means literally “Ugly Pool”. When you see this stunning place it is really hard to understand this name. It could be explained by the geothermal activity and murky water who appear shortly after an eruption, of which there is no indication today… Ljótipollur is a beautiful lake surrounded by dark-red crater walls. A surprising contrast of the nature…

On the way back, we will discover this dazzling waterfall. Haifoss “tall fall” deserves its name and is held to be the third-highest waterfall in Iceland, with a height of 122 meters. Just east of Háifoss you’ll find another waterfall, just marginally smaller, named Granni “Neighbor”. From the road it is hard to believe that a such massive show of nature takes place in the area. But as soon you will stand close to the fall, you will letting yourself taken away with those powerful waterfalls and you will never forget this incredible vision on the valley.

This small village is linked to Iceland by a small land strip. The pastel houses of this small harbor seem to be clung to the relief. Their facades and their roofs have some sweet colors of yellow, blue, purple or grey, and contrast with the rocks dotted with bright green grass. Stykkishólmur is proud of its houses of downtown, a magnificent example of traditional Icelandic houses from the XIX and XX century. The city received a prestigious award EDEN (European Destination of Excellence) for the protection and preservation of cultural and historical heritage. Its steep coast is peopled with thousands of sea birds which shelter into the rough cliffs.

Further west, we will visit the fishing harbor of Grundarfjörður. This small town is located at the base of the Mount Kirkjufell. This small town enchants people with its dynamic character. This is undoubtedly one of the prettiest landscapes of Iceland. The Kirkjufell, lonely mountain, nicknamed the Mountain Church, seems to rise up from a dream with its waterfalls, its beautiful lake in which it is reflected, and its plains stretch away in front of you. We find also the volcanic black rocks dotted with green moss…

We will stop on this beautiful and tranquil beach with gold sand, blue waters and surrounded by stunning cliffs. This place offers amazing views out to the sea and a fascinating history. From here, with a bit of luck – you can see seals…

It is a volcano up of 1446 meters, covered with snow all year. This imposing volcano has inspired the famous writer Jules Verne for his novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth“. The Snæfellsjökull owes its shape to the lava fields and phreatic eruptions that marked its daily these past 800,000 years. The surrounding landscapes are amazing. A great part of the peninsula is now protected by the establishment of a national park since 2001. In this magical space, you can discover strange formations of rocks which seem to have been carved, many plants and even have the chance to watch kittiwakes.

The journey through this region is rich in legends and tales. This trip will lead you towards this unusual pair of basaltic rocks with a height of 75 m and 61 m. Seeing from distance Lóndrangar looks like a huge castle reaching out to the sea. According to the local beliefs it is also an important living place for elves. The farmers in the area never make hay on the hill, because it is said to belong to the elves living in the area… The place is surrounded by beautiful cliffs which are a paradise for lovers of birdwatching: puffins and fulmars have their nests in the area.

Lost amid the basalt mountains, those twin villages full of charm and with a magical atmosphere, are connected by an extremely spectacular coastal road with a length of 2.5 km, where strange rock formations emerge from the water, such as stone monsters. Every year at the solstice, shamans and magicians get together at Arnarstapi for mysterious ceremonies.

It is a romantic, windswept location, a former fishing village located just a stone’s throw from the ocean. Surrounded by the Búðahraun lava field – rumour has it that is home to countless elves, and enjoying unsurpassed views out over the Atlantic, the tiny pitch-black church dates from 1703. When the importance of Buðir as a trading post declined, the hamlet was declared to no longer be a parish. A replacement church was needed. One woman, Steinunn Lárusdóttir, fought and won the King’s permission to build a new church… It serves today as a reminder of the strong Icelandic woman and her determination. With the majestic Snæfellsnes mountain as a backdrop, the view from there is spectacular.

Impossible to not fall in love with this corner of paradise.

On the way towards the North, we will stop for a pleasant walk through twin craters Grábrók and Grábrókarfell. The Grábrók crater was formed in a fissure eruption approximately 3400 years ago. The sight from here is absolutely stunning. Grá­brókarfell is a smaller crater covered with moss and birch bushes. These extraordinary reliefs offer an unforgettable vision.

A magnificent 2 km long and 20-25 m deep canyon with waterfalls, which are named Kolufossar due to the local folktale about the Troll woman Kola. Kola lived close by but sometimes she chose to sleep at a ledge down the waterfall. When she was lying there, she could put her hands down into the deepest part of the river and catch salmon with her bare hands . Driving to the side of the canyon and looking at this peaceful river drops into the gorge in two scenic waterfalls are a powerful experience. This sight will not let you unmoved.

The “Citadel” is a columnar basalt fortress and a volcanic plug. It is an unique natural phenomenon, altered by humans in earlier centuries. The sagas explain, that the fortress was used for Viking military purposes. It is one of Iceland´s most notable historic sites. There are steps leading up to the top. As you reach the top, there is a wide panoramic view over a large part of the region and a viewfinder is in place to help locate some of the important landmarks. The view from there is absolutely awesome.

Surrounded by waters of the bay Húnaflói (“Bear Bay”). The name comes from polar bears which sometimes reach the ice floe from Greenland. It is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. This place is deemed to be the best place to approach one of the biggest colonies of seals in Iceland. Do not miss this incredible spectacle of seals basking on the rocks and looking out of the corner of their eye the curious traveler. With any luck, it will even be possible to see mothers breastfeed their young. You will get closer to this nature than you had ever imagine. A wild and uninhabited finger of land with superb views out over incredible landscapes.

The only town of the peninsula. A quiet and peaceful place. A typical area full of charm, beautiful landscapes, great views of the mountains…

It is the most famous Icelandic rock. The legend tells that Hvítserkur was a troll with three legs who wanted to destroy the monastery Þingeyrar by bombarding it with a large rock and who forgot to retreat from the light and was turned to stone in the sunrise. The stunning silhouette of this rock have inspired many legends and nicknames. Emerging from the water, this massive basalt block of 15 meters high, looks like a troll, an elephant or a dinosaur, it is up to your imagination… Hvítserkur also means “White Shirt” and derives its name from being covered of Shag and Cormorant guano. You can see many birds shelter in every corner of the rock cut out by the erosion of the ocean. Hvítserkur rock offers a landscape which constantly moves at the rhythm of time and tides. It delivers a stunning and powerful sight and show. You could have the sensation that the rock is alive.

“The Trout Fall” is the largest and the most spectacular waterfall of river Þjórsá. It is also one of the most voluminous waterfalls in Iceland. The average water flow is 360 m³ / sek. A relatively unknown but a very spectacular and powerful waterfall full of beauty, an ideal place for photographers with beautiful surroundings.

A picturesque waterfall of an unusual high of 65m, irrigated by the river Seljalandsá, itself fueled by Eyjafjallajökull glacier. One of the most popular subjects for photographers. As water flows overhang, it is possible to take a path that allows going behind the waterfall. From there, the sight is simply divine. You will discover how fun it is to sneak and disappear behind the water curtain and be out of world for a moment… You will be dazzled by this magnificent site, the power of the water, the beautiful rainbows which go through the waterfall due to the sunlight and the vapor droplets. Sometimes the wind seems to move the water curtain. A magical show of the nature…

Also called Gljúfrabúi, this interesting waterfall is carefully hidden behind a narrow opening in the mountain. Listen the deep roaring, echoing sound of the falling water and become an explorer to find out this magical and intimate place which keeps the purity of a place out of time.

One of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and one of the 5 largest in the country. An iconic symbol with a width of 25m and a drop of 60m. Getting so close to the base of such a large waterfall is a quite rare experience. You can also enjoy it from above : there are stairs that lead to the top. The view from there is stunning. On sunny days, you can see a single or a double rainbows which are formed with the powerful water splashing.

A popular branch of Mýrdalsjökull, which is one of the largest glaciers of Iceland. You can experience the natural contrasts of the region: vast stretches of black sand and craters which suddenly give a way to bright walls of white ice, with blue highlights – huge and majestic. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and dramatic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. These wonders reflect the perpetual struggle between fire and ice.

The name Dyrhólaey means “door hill island” in Icelandic. This curious rocky arm is piercing with a shape which forms a door, an opening to the ocean… It is also a natural parc, sanctuary of birds, where you can observe many species especially the puffins, living symbol of Iceland. From there it is possible to admire a landscape of raw beauty formed by the long beaches of black sand, the unleashed ocean, the cliffs with rugged shapes, formed by a piling up of basalt columns.

This black sand beach is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. From there you can observe the Reynisdrangar, these lava columns sculpted by the waters, which emerge from the ocean. These dark and towering formations, the highest is 66m high, are the remains of the piling up of cooled lava. According to the legend, they are ancient trolls who have been surprised out of their caves

It is the most southerly village in the country. After Vík í Mýrdal, nothing else except the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its church, a white building with a red roof located on a hill, proudly dominates the modest houses of this village. The ocean on one side, the imposing cliffs of Mount Reynisfjall on the other side. Its isolated location and its magnificent environment have made the character of the village. The wind, the water and the time have carved the different rocky buildings that surround it. There is no place for the superfluous : it is nature, rigorous and beautiful, which lays down the law.

During the trip, you can enjoy the sight of the glaciers : Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, Vestmanna islands and volcano Hekla. (Depending on the weather conditions).

Reykjanes Peninsula is a perfect place to discover Iceland. With its valleys flows into the lava, its bare heights, its dark rocks and gaping craters, the landscape so exceptional of the peninsula makes us showing wonderfully the unusual character of this country…

In this part of the island, it is the elements that dictate to the world how to live. This strip of land located in the southwest of Iceland is marked by an active underground volcanic activity. Its cooled lava soil, that does not allow to the vegetation to grow, gives us to see bald reliefs and dark rocks typical of volcanic areas, a moonscape shaped by lava flows… The combination of that, a lot of hot springs and sulfur springs make us understanding why Rekjanes Peninsula is an incredible place of special beauty. It is also a unique place in the world because it is the only point on earth where the rift that separates the tectonic plates of Europe and North America is out of the ocean and visible. These extraordinary reliefs shelter many species of birds which are stunning with their unique color blends.

The largest and deepest lake in this part of Iceland. The lake sits on a highly active volcanic fissure zone. The lake is surrounded by black sand shores and volcanic mountains. After the series of earthquakes in 2000, the lake began to disappear into a large fissure created by one of the earthquakes : an enigmatic phenomenon… Summer houses that were once mere steps from waterfront are now more than a kilometer away from the water’s edge. The placid waters have dropped more than four meters during the following year. In their place is a barren lake bed speckled with sulphur-rimmed thermal springs that spit boiling water and mud.

We continue our journey to the charming geothermal field of Seltún. This place has many mudpots and fumaroles, heated by an underground magma chamber. Sulphuric water and gases have created colorful deposits. We will take a wooden pathways to explore this fascinating area, especially when a new maar is born with a spectacular explosion.

Near the geothermal fields are located several maars, rounded lakes. They were formed by explosions caused by the overheated steam of groundwater. We will stop at the largest one : Grænavatn. Up to 46 meters deep and 350 meters wide, it is a gorgeous emerald colored lake caused by a combination of thermal algae and sunlight absorbing crystals.

During our tour, we will explore a protected natural feature : two perfectly-formed scoria craters. They are a part of a lava ring. The age of this stunning volcanic phenomenon is not well known, but if we look the soil cover, the effects of weathering on its surface it might be 7000-8000 years old. You will enjoy this amazing moonscape.

The journey proceeds through one of Iceland’s best-known bird-cliffs and the highest cliffs in the southwest part of Iceland. Their average height is 50 meters, and the highest point is 70 meters. It is a home for almost 60 000 pairs of birds – mostly gulls, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars. From the middle of March to the end of August you can watch also puffins – a living symbol of Iceland. And if we are lucky we can also see whales and dolphins which are floating near the shore.

This place is both surprising and enchanting. This is a crater with ocher and orange stones that contrast with the turquoise milky waters of a lake located at the top. It is said that if you put your head under the water, you can hear the volcano breathing…

We continue our trip to a desert volcanic lava area. From there the view is amazing, you can see those cliffs and rocks growing straight out of the ocean and explore a mountain composed of tuff layers, pillow lava and breccia. This mountain was formed in a single eruption and shows evidence of the different phases of eruption.

The tour continues through wonderful lava fields and we go to the unique place where two of the Earth’s tectonic plates split. You will have the opportunity to walk over this footbridge which crosses the fissure. This 18 meters long bridge, in a symbolic purpose, illustrates the phenomenon of continental drift and connects the tectonic plates. It is where the Old World (Eurasian continent) and the New World (North American continent) was engaged in a tug of war. From the 1220s to the 1240s, the area was all on fire ! Evidence of this firestorm can still be seen in the canyons, crevices and along the jagged lines of this amazing place.

In the heart of Reykjanes Peninsula, this place appeared after a volcanic eruption under a glacier who was covering the area a long time ago… Sog is the largest freshwater river in Iceland in terms of water volume (average flow is 110 m³/sek) and flows out in a multicolored gorge. These tint are due to few mud pools, sulfur, and a high temperature alteration of the area. You will be astonished by this colorful site and the mind-blowing surroundings.
